Today is my first performance appraisal with my supervisor, Fendra. I was nervous with what would be going on, but this feeling then get off my mind. I imagined this would be a threatening moment throughout my journey in ConocoPhillips Indonesia because one of my friends deemed that performance appraisal is time when everyone capability in handling their work responsibility will be judged and fully evaluated. On the other hand, another source said that it is a detrimental phase of everyone to be placed in the same position or not.
In the midst of nervousness I kept maintaining my feeling as well as every strumbling block in mind. I attempted to calm down myself that this is a great process in live for continuous self-development. Suddenly, a chapter of “Dealing with Conflict” reminded me on how to reduce nervousness by thinking positively. This chapter was really helpful and diminishing emotional ups and downs.
“I believe I can perform well”, my heart said when my right-hand tought the door’ handle. My supervisor then let me get in to take a sit. Although she looked very pale and was not really fit, she requested me courageously to read development plan of my own from one point to another point. She paid attention to what every single word came out from my mouth with smile. A minute after I finished out reading all of my Performance Agreement, then her turn was appearing.
Heeemmh, the awaiting moment finally come on the stage. She provide me various feedbacks and commentaries on my job responsibilities. Although frequent calls were placed on her phone, she ignored and said “Sorry, I am unable to talk now because I am now with my subordinate for evaluation. Please get back again an hour again!”. It was wonderful and drive me so much speechless because she fully paid attention to my progress.
“Mere, there is a thing you need to improve like your constant work spirit. What makes you different than others is the way you manage feedbacks from me. To be honest, you are always positive whenenever taking up any comments, critics, and even a negative force from other employess. You transform it become a positive energy inside your mind to broaden your capability. All of your goals are well-outreached! and it is a great accomplishment for you because in a short time you could catch up all aspects at HSE”, she explained.
Oh really?-I was surprised. “Yes, this is my honest perception!”, she replied. “But…I am not graduated from environmental science!”, my emphasise. “No…no…no, your performance in handling some environmental aspect is great and I do appreciate it”.
“Lastly, please do keep up your high capability in time-management and change. Also, keep focusing on problems not one’s personal character when dealing with problems. This is what my former supervisor pointed out at that couple of time to me!”.
This day might be hard to faded away from my life because it is one of my starting point on my career !
